A recent Blog Resources Online reader, Raghuram, asked me why I switched from Blogger to WordPress. And while there are countless arguments for and against (perhaps I will post about this later) one thing I would absolutely do is have your own domain name.

Blogger makes this easy. Log into your blogger account, go to settings, then publishing. Click on the link that says “custom domain”. You have the option right here to purchase your own domain name through one of Google’s partners. If you already own your own domain click the link that says “switch to advanced settings”. Before you enter your domain here, make sure that you click the link for, and READ, the setup instructions. You will need to make some changes to your DNS settings at your domain registrar. (This sounds more difficult than it really is.)

Once everything is set up correctly it will take some time, anywhere from a couple hours to as long as 48 hours for your changes to take effect.

Now, people can find you using yourdomain.com as well as yourblogname.blogspot.com. This will make your blog name a bit more memorable. In addition, this will give you the flexibility to keep the same address should you choose to switch to a different blogging platform in the future.
